This 15-day overland tour from Kathmandu offers a rare opportunity to experience the spiritual heart of the Himalayas while exploring the dramatic landscapes of Tibet.
The journey begins in Kathmandu, where travelers complete the necessary Tibet travel permits and enjoy guided sightseeing to some of Nepal’s most important cultural and religious landmarks, including Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath Stupa. After the preparations, the adventure continues with an overland drive through the Himalayan foothills to the Nepal–Tibet border at Rasuwa Gadhi Border, where the journey enters the vast and mystical Tibetan plateau.
As you travel deeper into Tibet, the landscape transforms into breathtaking high-altitude plains, turquoise lakes, and snow-covered mountain ranges. The route passes through traditional Tibetan towns such as Gyirong and Saga, allowing time for acclimatization and preparation before reaching the sacred Lake Mansarovar. Pilgrims believe that bathing in or meditating beside Lake Mansarovar purifies the soul and washes away the sins of a lifetime. The peaceful environment, combined with the stunning views of Mount Kailash reflected in the clear waters of the lake, creates a deeply spiritual experience.
The highlight of the pilgrimage is the Kailash Parikrama (Kora), a three-day sacred trek around Mount Kailash. Beginning from Darchen, the journey follows an ancient pilgrimage trail used for centuries by devotees from different faiths. The trek offers magnificent views of the north face of Mount Kailash at Dirapuk Monastery, before crossing the challenging high-altitude pass of Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters. This part of the journey is considered the most spiritually powerful section of the pilgrimage and a true test of endurance and faith.
Throughout the journey, travelers are accompanied by experienced guides and supported with carefully planned acclimatization days, comfortable accommodations, and reliable transportation. The tour is designed not only for spiritual seekers but also for adventurers who wish to explore one of the most remote and mystical regions of the Himalayas.
Completing the Kailash Parikrama is believed to bring spiritual merit, inner peace, and lifelong blessings. Whether undertaken for religious devotion, personal reflection, or the desire to explore the sacred landscapes of Tibet, this Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu is truly a transformative Himalayan pilgrimage.
During the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, meals are arranged to ensure travelers have adequate nutrition and energy throughout the journey across the Tibetan plateau.
Breakfast and dinner are generally served at the hotels or guesthouses where you stay each night. These meals are simple but nutritious, typically including items such as bread, eggs, soup, rice, vegetables, noodles, and tea or coffee. The food is designed to be light and suitable for high-altitude travel.
During long driving days, packed lunches are provided and enjoyed along the route as a picnic lunch while admiring the spectacular Himalayan landscapes. This allows travelers to continue the journey comfortably without needing to stop for long periods.
In remote locations such as Lake Mansarovar, Dirapuk Monastery, and Zutulpuk Monastery, only very basic guesthouses and small restaurants are available. The menu options are limited but sufficient for travelers, usually offering Tibetan and simple Chinese-style meals such as noodles, rice dishes, soups, and vegetables.
There are also small local shops along the route where travelers can purchase bottled water, soft drinks, snacks, biscuits, and instant noodles. However, as these areas are very remote, it is recommended to carry some personal snacks, energy bars, or preferred drinks for additional comfort during the trip.
Travelers planning a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar must obtain a special Tibet Group Visa issued by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nepal in Kathmandu. This visa is mandatory for all foreign travelers entering Tibet from Nepal.
According to the latest travel regulations, a minimum of five travelers is required to apply for a Tibet Group Visa for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage. All applicants must arrive in Kathmandu before the tour departure date to complete the visa process.
