The country has one international airport located in Paro. Flights operated by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines arrive and depart from destinations including Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Bodhgaya, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Guwahati and Singapore. Private jets or charters can fly into Bhutan after obtaining the relevant approvals. There are also domestic airports in Yonphula in eastern Bhutan, Bumthang in central Bhutan, and Gelephu in south-central Bhutan.

Bhutan’s unit currency is called Ngultrum, symbolized as Nu, with the currency code BTN. It holds an equivalent value to the Indian rupee, and interestingly, Indian currency is accepted as legal tender in Bhutan, except for the recently introduced 500 and 1000 rupee notes. However, the Bhutanese currency cannot be used in India. Ngultrum serves as the recognized local currency in Bhutan and is used for all national and international economic transactions.

The weather in Bhutan experiences significant variations depending on the elevation. The spring season, from March to May, is often considered the best time to visit. Despite occasional rainfall, this period brings vibrant wildflowers and the delightful melodies of birds in the valleys. It offers a fantastic opportunity for serene hikes in Bhutan’s remote locations. Another excellent time to visit is during autumn, from October to December. Similar to spring, these months are less rainy, providing clear skies and fresh air, making it ideal for hiking along Bhutan’s tranquil trails. In higher elevations, autumn may bring occasional snowfalls, adding to the picturesque scenery. However, the winter months of December and January boast a photographer’s dream with thick blankets of snow, but the temperatures can be colder. On the other hand, the monsoon season, from June to August, is characterized by heavy rainfall, making it less suitable for travel in Bhutan and best avoided.

The primary reason why Bhutan is so expensive is the tourism royalty fee (Sustainable Development Fee). Bhutan is not cheap unless you’re from Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives.

Bhutan isn’t richer than Nepal, Bhutan isn’t even richer than Kathmandu. GDP of Kathmandu: ~$6.5 billion. But average Bhutanese is definitely richer than average Nepalese.

January – February. This is the coldest time to visit Bhutan, with temperatures across the country frequently dipping below zero. Anywhere above 3,000 metres is likely to see substantial snow and strong winds, making trekking in the highlands untenable.
