Khumai Danda Trek – Introduction

Khumai Danda Trek is one of those rare trails that makes you think — “why doesn’t everyone know about this?” It sits in the Annapurna region of Nepal, just a short drive from Pokhara, yet most travellers walk right past it on their way to the more famous Poon Hill Trek or Mardi Himal Trek.

And honestly? That’s exactly what makes it so special.

The Khumai Danda Trek takes you through rhododendron and oak forests, past traditional Gurung and Magar villages, and up to one of the most jaw-dropping ridge viewpoints in the entire Annapurna region — Korchan Danda at 3,700m. From up there, you get a sweeping panorama of Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Lamjung Himal. All of it, practically to yourself.

The best part? You can do the whole thing in just 3 days. It’s the perfect short trek for people who have limited time but still want a proper mountain experience — not just a day hike, but a real, immersive Nepali trekking adventure.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 Pokhara (827 m) to Hile Kharka (2160 m) via Ghachowk (1080 m)

  • Walking Distance5-6 hrs
  • Highest Altitude2160 m
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
Day 1 of the Khumai Danda Trek is all about getting off the tarmac and into the mountains. You start the morning in Pokhara with an early breakfast, then drive to Hemja — a small, quiet town about 30 minutes from Pokhara. From Hemja, the actual trekking begins. The trail leads you through Ghachowk — a pretty Gurung village surrounded by terraced farmland. Rice fields, millet crops, and maize growing in neat rows on the hillside. It's very rural, very real, and a lovely introduction to life in the Annapurna foothills. The locals are friendly, children wave from doorways, and the smell of wood smoke drifts from the kitchens. From Ghachowk, the trail climbs steadily upward through small villages and dense forest. The path gets quieter and more peaceful the higher you go. After about 5–6 hours of walking across 14 kilometres, you arrive at Hile Kharka (2,160m) — a small settlement with teahouses where you'll spend the night. By the time you arrive, the mountains are already peeking through the trees. Annapurna, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Lamjung Himal appear on the horizon — a teaser for everything Day 2 is going to deliver.

Day 2 Hile Kharka (2160 m) to Khumai Danda Summit (3245 m)

  • Walking Distance5-6 hrs
  • Highest Altitude3245 m
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
This is the day the Khumai Danda Trek really earns its name. After breakfast at Hile Kharka, you set off on the climb to the summit — Khumai Danda at 3,245m. It's a proper mountain day, and it asks something of you. But what it gives back is worth every single step. The trail today heads mostly upward through peaceful, dense forest. This isn't the kind of forest you walk through quickly — it's the kind you stop in, look around, and take a photo of every five minutes. Tall trees, soft mossy ground, the occasional monkey crashing through the canopy, birdsong everywhere. It's genuinely lovely. Some sections of the path narrow and steepen, that's normal for this route. Take your time. Rest when you need to. The path passes through Samsur Deurali which is a small ridgeline saddle — before the final push up to Khumai Danda itself. And then you're there. At 3,245 metres. And the world opens up in front of you. Across the entire horizon, you see Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m), Hiunchuli, and Lamjung Himal — all of them close enough to feel real, all of them reflecting the afternoon light. You'll just stand there for a while. That's completely normal. Everyone does. Tonight you sleep at Khumai Danda. The evening sunset over the mountains is spectacular. The stars at 3,245m are extraordinary. Sleep well — tomorrow morning gets even better. Quick tip: The forest section today has a narrower, more uphill path than Day 1. Trekking poles are very helpful here. If you have them, bring them. If you don't, grab a walking stick from the trail — it genuinely helps.

Day 3 Korchan Danda Sunrise (3700 m) and Return to Pokhara

  • Walking Distance6-7 Hrs
  • Highest Altitude3700 m
  • AccommodationHotel in Pokhara
  • Included mealsBreakfast
Wake up early. Seriously — this is the most important morning of the entire Khumai Danda Trek. After a quick cup of tea, you'll hike from Khumai Danda up to Korchan Danda at 3,700 metres — the highest point of the entire route. It takes about 1.5–2 hours from camp. You want to be there for sunrise. And oh, what a sunrise it is. The Korchan Danda viewpoint is arguably the best mountain panorama you can get on a 3-day trek anywhere in Nepal. From here, the views stretch from Dhaulagiri in the west all the way to the Manaslu range in the east. On a clear morning, you can count eight or more distinct Himalayan peaks. After taking approximately one thousand photographs, it's time to head back down. The descent from Korchan Danda through Khumai Danda and all the way back to Ghachowk takes around 4–5 hours and covers roughly 10km. The path is beautiful going down — you see the valley below, the terraced fields, the villages, the whole landscape laid out beneath you. At Ghachowk, your vehicle is waiting. Drive back to Pokhara in about one hour. Hot shower, lakeside dinner, cold drink. The Khumai Danda Trek is complete. You did it.

Khumai Danda Trek – Detailed Overview

Khumai Danda Trek — Best Time to Visit in 2026

Khumai Danda Trek can be done in any season, but some months are much better than others. Here’s a simple breakdown:

Season Description
Spring (Best) — Mar–May Rhododendrons in full bloom, clear skies, mild temperatures. The most beautiful time for the Khumai Danda Trek.
Autumn (Best) — Sep–Nov Crystal-clear mountain views, stable weather, dry trails. Great visibility from Korchan Danda.
Winter — Dec–Feb Cold and snowy above 2,500m. The trail can be icy. Good for adventurous trekkers who love snow — pack warm layers.
Monsoon — Jun–Aug Heavy rain, slippery forest trails, cloudy mountains. Not the best time — views are mostly hidden by cloud.

Khumai Danda Trek — Permits & Fees

Good news — the Khumai Danda Trek has very simple and affordable permit requirements. You only need one permit, and it costs almost nothing.

Machhapuchhre Municipality Permit

The Khumai Danda Trek falls under Machhapuchhre Municipality, and all trekkers need to obtain a local trekking permit before entering the area.

  • Cost: NPR 500 per person (approximately USD 4) for foreign nationals.
  • Where to get it: Your guide or agency can arrange this in Pokhara before the trek starts. Quick and easy.
  • Note: Unlike more popular Annapurna treks, the Khumai Danda Trek does not currently require a TIMS Card or full ACAP permit — but always verify current rules with your guide.

Khumai Danda Trek — Packing List

You don’t need fancy gear for the Khumai Danda Trek. But you do need the right basics. Here’s exactly what to pack — nothing extra, nothing missing.

Clothing & Footwear

  • Trekking boots — sturdy and broken in before the trip
  • Warm fleece jacket or down layer
  • Waterproof rain jacket — even in dry season
  • Thermal base layers — top and bottom
  • 2 pairs of trekking trousers
  • Warm hat and gloves — cold at 3,700m
  • Wool or synthetic trekking socks — 3 pairs
  • Sandals or flip-flops for teahouse evenings

Gear & Essentials

  • Daypack — 20 to 30 litres is enough
  • Sleeping bag liner — teahouses have blankets, but it gets cold
  • Trekking poles — very helpful on steep sections
  • Headlamp — essential for the early Korchan Danda sunrise hike
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Water purification tablets
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ and lip balm
  • Basic first aid kit — blister pads, pain relief
  • Camera or phone with power bank
  • Cash in Nepali Rupees — no ATMs on the trail

Khumai Danda Trek — Safety Tips

Khumai Danda Trek is a moderate route and very manageable for most people — but a few basic safety habits will make your experience much smoother and safer.

General Safety Tips

  • Stay Hydrated — Drink water consistently throughout the day, even when you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration at altitude hits fast. Carry at least 2 litres at all times.
  • Go Slow on Steep Sections — Day 2 has some steep, narrow sections through the forest. Take your time. Rest when you need to. There is no prize for getting to the top first.
  • Trek with a Guide — The Khumai Danda Trek is a newer route with fewer trail signs. A local guide who knows the path is strongly recommended, especially for first-timers.
  • Watch for Altitude Symptoms — At 3,700m, some people experience mild altitude symptoms — headache, dizziness, nausea. If symptoms are serious, descend immediately.
  • Check the Weather — Mountain weather changes quickly. Always carry a rain jacket regardless of season. If visibility is very poor, wait it out at the teahouse.
  • Tell Someone Your Plan — Share your itinerary with someone back home or at your hotel in Pokhara. Let them know your expected return date.

You Should Know Before Travel Expand All Collapse All

Yes — with one condition. The Khumai Danda Trek is rated moderate, which means it's suitable for beginners who have decent fitness and can walk 5–7 hours a day. If you exercise regularly and don't mind some uphill sections, you'll be absolutely fine.

From Pokhara, you drive to Hemja — about 30 minutes by taxi or private vehicle. From Hemja, the trek begins toward Ghachowk. Your guide or agency in Pokhara can arrange all transport easily.

Technically yes, but it's not recommended. The Khumai Danda Trek is a newer and less-visited route — trail signs are limited and the path through the forest can be unclear in places. A local guide makes the whole experience safer and much more enjoyable.

The highest point is Korchan Danda at 3,700m (12,139 ft), which you reach on Day 3 for the sunrise viewpoint. The main Khumai Danda ridge sits at 3,245m where you spend the night on Day 2.

From the Khumai Danda and Korchan Danda viewpoints, you can see Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Machhapuchhre / Fishtail (6,993m), Hiunchuli, and Lamjung Himal. On a clear morning, the panorama is genuinely extraordinary.

Yes — there are local teahouses and homestays along the route, particularly in Ghachowk, Hile Kharka, and at Khumai Danda. Accommodation is basic but comfortable — simple twin rooms, blankets, and home-cooked Nepali meals. Rustic, warm, and part of what makes this trek so genuine. Khumai Danda Trek — Is It Right for You? Khumai Danda Trek is the kind of experience that reminds you why people come to Nepal in the first place. It's not about ticking off a famous name. It's about walking through a quiet forest with no one else around, arriving at a ridge at 3,245 metres and feeling the wind on your face, watching the sun rise over a row of 8,000-metre peaks from a place that most tourists have never heard of. It's short. It's accessible from Pokhara. It's affordable. And it gives you one of the best mountain views in the entire Annapurna region — from a place that still feels untouched and completely real. If you have 3 days and you're anywhere near Pokhara — the Khumai Danda Trek in 2025/26 is the best decision you can make. Pack your boots, say yes, and go.
