On this day, you will cross a ridge with panoramic views of the Khumbu peaks, then descend to the valley floor. Pass the second glacial lake (Longponga, 4,690m) and climb the steep terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's longest glacier — before reaching the emerald waters of the third Gokyo Lake. The village sits at the water's edge with Cho Oyu dominating the skyline.

Day 11 Trek to Dole

Gokyo Ri Trek – Detail Overview:

The Gokyo Ri Trek with Alliance Treks begins in Kathmandu, where you spend a day exploring the city and visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After that, you move toward the mountains with a short 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. This scenic flight brings you to a high-altitude airport and marks the real start of your Gokyo trek journey. From Lukla, you walk down into the Dudh Koshi River valley. Along the way, you cross exciting suspension bridges decorated with prayer flags and continue toward Phakding. Next, you climb a steep trail to Namche Bazaar, a key Sherpa town. Here, you rest for acclimatization, which is important for your Gokyo valley trek.

While staying in Namche, you can hike to the Everest View Hotel to see Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. In addition, you may visit the Sherpa Culture Museum to learn about local traditions and history. After this, you leave the Everest Base Camp route and move northwest toward the Gokyo region. As the trail rises, the landscape changes beautifully. You pass forests, yak grazing fields, and high mountain terrain. Then you stop at Dole and Machermo for altitude adjustment. From here, you may also see Cho Oyu, a stunning Himalayan peak. Gradually, you continue your Gokyo lake trek, walking beside clear blue lakes and dramatic mountain scenery until you reach Gokyo village.

In Gokyo, you rest and then climb Gokyo Ri early in the morning before sunrise. As the sun rises, you see breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. You also witness the massive Ngozumpa Glacier, which makes the view even more special. Finally, you return to Lukla by following the same route and then fly back to Kathmandu. You Should Know Before Travel Expand All Collapse All

The Gokyo Valley Trek is rated Moderate. You will walk for 5 to 7 hours every day on the Gokyo Valley Trek. The hardest parts of the Gokyo Valley Trek are when you go up to Namche Bazaar and when you climb Gokyo Ri in the morning. You do not need to know any skills for the Gokyo Valley Trek but you should be in good shape. If you walk or run a lot before you go on the Gokyo Valley Trek you will be ready.

The best time to go on the Gokyo Valley Trek is in the spring or the autumn. In the autumn you will have weather and you can see the mountains clearly from Gokyo Ri on the Gokyo Valley Trek. In the spring it is warmer. The rhododendron flowers are blooming on the lower part of the Gokyo Valley Trek.

The Gokyo Valley Trek and the Everest Base Camp Trek start on the path to Namche Bazaar but then they go in different directions. The Gokyo Valley Trek goes northwest to the glacial lakes and Gokyo Ri. On the hand the Everest Base Camp Trek goes northeast to Gorak Shep. The Gokyo Valley Trek is special because you can see four high mountains at the same time from Gokyo Ri. Also the Gokyo Valley Trek is not as crowded as the Everest Base Camp Trek, which makes it a great choice if you want a peaceful time in the Himalayas.

To stay safe you should climb up slowly and never miss a rest day. On the Gokyo Valley Trek you get to rest at Namche which is 3,440 meters high. You also get a full day to relax at Gokyo which is 4,790 meters high before you climb Gokyo Ri. You should drink a lot of water 3 to 4 liters every day. It is also an idea to avoid drinking alcohol walk at a steady pace eat well and sleep well. Your guide will check your oxygen levels every day. Carry a first aid kit with them all the time. If you start to feel really sick the best thing to do is to go down to a lower place right away.
