The Langtang Ganja La Pass Trek is a demanding 10-day adventure that links two of Nepal’s most rewarding trekking regions — Langtang and Helambu — via a genuinely challenging high-altitude crossing rarely attempted by standard teahouse trekkers. Unlike the popular Langtang Valley trek, which turns back the way it came, this route pushes on past Kyanjin Gompa, climbing through wild, glaciated terrain to cross the Ganja La Pass at 5,122m before descending into the quieter, culturally distinct villages of the Helambu region. This trekking route is next to Gosaikunda Lake Trek and Ruby Valley Trek too so its quite popular.
The trek begins with a scenic but bumpy drive to Syabrubesi, followed by a steady climb along the Langtang Khola through forest and traditional Tamang villages to Mundu and Kyanjin Gompa, the last proper settlement before the high country. A dedicated excursion day to Tsergo Ri offers both a crucial acclimatization test and one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in the entire Langtang region. From here, the trek leaves teahouse comfort behind entirely, pushing through a high camp at Ganja La Phedi before the demanding crossing of the pass itself — a long, physically serious day that rewards the effort with sweeping views and a genuine sense of accomplishment.
The descent on the far side of Ganja La brings a dramatic change in scenery and culture, dropping through Dukpu into the Sherpa and Hyolmo villages of Helambu, with Tarkeghyang serving as the gateway back to the road network and a private jeep transfer to Kathmandu. A built-in contingency day at the end of the trip accounts for the genuine unpredictability of high-pass weather, ensuring your onward travel plans stay protected even if conditions require an extra day on the mountain.
With Alliance Treks, the Langtang Ganja La Pass Trek is more than a high-altitude adventure. From Kyanjin Gompa and Tsergo Ri to Ganja La Pass and Helambu, we focus on proper preparation, experienced guidance, safety, responsible trekking, and reliable support throughout your Himalayan journey.

Langtang Ganja la Pass Trek for trekkers who’ve already done the standard Langtang Valley trek, or who simply want more from their time in this beautiful but often underrated region, the Ganja La Pass extension transforms a pleasant valley walk into a genuinely serious mountain adventure. The trek’s structure captures two very different sides of the Nepal Himalaya in a single, continuous journey — the glaciated, Tibetan-influenced high country of Langtang, and the gentler, forested hills of Helambu — connected by a pass crossing that few trekking itineraries even attempt.
The opening days follow the well-established Langtang trail, climbing from Syabrubesi through Khanjim and Rimche along the Langtang Khola, with the valley narrowing and the forest thickening as you gain elevation. By the time you reach Mundu, the first proper views of Langtang Lirung begin to dominate the skyline, and the trail’s character shifts noticeably, passing traditional water mills, prayer wheels, chortens, and sacred stone mounds that mark this as a region deeply shaped by Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Kyanjin Gompa, reached the following day on a shorter, more leisurely walking day, serves as the last proper village before the trek’s high-altitude phase begins.
The acclimatization day at Kyanjin Gompa is built around an excursion to Tsergo Ri, a demanding but spectacular climb to just under 5,000m that offers panoramic views across Langtang Lirung and the surrounding glaciated peaks — and, just as importantly, gives your body a genuine test of its readiness for the altitude still to come, including a first distant look at the Ganja La Pass itself.
What follows is where this trek distinguishes itself from virtually every other Langtang itinerary. Leaving Kyanjin Gompa, the trail climbs into territory with no permanent settlements, reaching Ganja La Phedi — a high camp used specifically as a staging point for the pass crossing. The following day’s crossing of Ganja La itself is long, physically demanding, and occasionally technical depending on snow conditions, descending through moraine and loose scree to Dukpu, a dramatic and remote overnight camp far from any road or village.
From Dukpu, the trek undergoes one of its most striking transformations: in the space of a single day’s walking, you descend roughly 1,500 meters, trading the stark, glaciated terrain of the high pass for the warmer, greener hills of Helambu. Tarkeghyang, a substantial Sherpa village known for its monastery and traditional architecture, marks the point where the trek effectively ends, with a private jeep completing the journey back to Kathmandu the following day. A final contingency day is deliberately built into the schedule — a sensible acknowledgment that high-pass crossings like Ganja La can be affected by weather, and that protecting your onward international travel plans is worth one extra day of buffer.
