The Ama Yangri Trek is a compact, 7-day journey into the Helambu region of Sindhupalchok district, one of the closest Himalayan trekking areas to Kathmandu. The route drives out through Melamchi to Timbu, then follows a forested trail up to Tarkeghyang, a historic Sherpa village, before a full day dedicated to climbing Ama Yangri Peak (3,771m) — a summit regarded locally as a guardian deity of the Helambu valley — and returning the same route. The trek then descends to Sermathang before driving back to Kathmandu.
This is a genuinely short-format trek by Nepal standards, built for travellers with limited time who still want a real Himalayan summit experience, close-up mountain views, and time in traditional Sherpa and Hyolmo villages within Langtang National Park. Run by Alliance Treks & Expeditions, trekking in Nepal since 1992, this itinerary suits first-time trekkers, families, and experienced hikers alike looking for a shorter alternative to the Everest or Annapurna regions.

Ama Yangri was one of the highlights of my Nepal trip. I enjoyed the slower pace, beautiful forests, quiet villages, and spectacular mountain scenery. Reaching the Ama Yangri area gave us some incredible views and made all the uphill walking worthwhile. Race was an excellent guide who was supportive without making the trek feel rushed. Everything came together for a really memorable seven-day adventure.
I loved almost every part of this seven-day journey. The combination of peaceful trails, mountain landscapes, Buddhist cultural elements, and village life made it feel much more special than I expected. The higher viewpoints were stunning when the weather was clear. Race was friendly, organized, and very knowledgeable. I would definitely consider exploring another part of Nepal with this team.
This trek felt very authentic and gave me a chance to see a different side of Nepal. I enjoyed walking through the villages and forests and meeting local people along the route. The climb toward Ama Yangri was challenging in places, but the scenery made it enjoyable. Race was a caring guide who always made sure we had enough rest and water. Highly memorable trip.
I had an excellent time on this trek. The route gave us plenty of beautiful scenery without feeling like we were constantly surrounded by other trekkers. I enjoyed the quiet mornings, mountain air, and views from the higher trail. Race was dependable and looked after the group very well. The seven days passed much faster than I expected.
What I liked most about Ama Yangri was that it wasn’t only about reaching the viewpoint. The villages, forests, local traditions, and conversations along the way were just as interesting. The mountain scenery was an added bonus. Race was very knowledgeable about the local culture and surroundings, and he was always happy to answer our questions. A very genuine Nepal trekking experience.
Ama Yangri was my first proper Himalayan trekking experience, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction. The trail had challenging moments, but there was also plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and take photos. I especially loved the peaceful forest sections. Race was patient and made sure I never felt pressured to walk faster than I could manage. I really enjoyed the entire journey.
Everything about the trek was well organized. The walking days had a good rhythm, and I really enjoyed seeing the scenery change as we gained elevation. The mountain views were impressive, but I also loved the forests and villages along the route. Race was attentive and knowledgeable, especially when we had questions about the local area. It was a very enjoyable experience.
This was exactly the kind of trip I needed after spending so much time in cities. The forests, fresh mountain air, quiet trails, and small settlements made the whole week feel refreshing. Ama Yangri itself was a special highlight. Race was professional but also very friendly, which made the days on the trail enjoyable. I came back feeling refreshed and with many great memories.
There were a few sections where my legs definitely felt the climb, but reaching the higher parts made it completely worthwhile. The mountain views were fantastic, and the peaceful surroundings made the experience even better. I liked that the trek didn’t feel overly crowded. Race kept a good pace and encouraged us whenever the trail became challenging. Very happy with the experience.
One of the best parts of this trek for me was experiencing the local village life. The people were welcoming, and it was interesting to see a quieter side of Nepal away from Kathmandu. The walks through the forests were also beautiful. Race was caring and easy to talk to, and he shared plenty of information about the area. A really enjoyable trek.
I had a great seven days on the Ama Yangri Trek. The route was a good combination of nature and culture, with forests, traditional villages, and beautiful Himalayan scenery. I particularly liked the peaceful atmosphere around the villages. Race was an excellent companion on the trail and always checked that everyone was doing well. The whole trip was organized smoothly.
Ama Yangri felt much quieter than I expected. I enjoyed being away from busy tourist areas and spending time in the mountain villages. Some uphill sections were tiring, but taking our time made everything manageable. The views from the higher points were worth every step. Race was supportive throughout and made the trek feel relaxed rather than rushed.
This trek gave me exactly the kind of Himalayan experience I was looking for. The forests were incredibly peaceful, and the changing scenery kept the walk interesting every day. Reaching the Ama Yangri viewpoint was definitely one of my favorite moments. Race did a great job guiding us and explaining things about the villages and surroundings. I would happily do another trek with the same team.
The Ama Yangri Trek was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. I really enjoyed walking through the quiet forests and small mountain villages. The views from higher up were beautiful, especially when the mountains started appearing through the clouds. Race was a very helpful guide and always made sure we were comfortable. It was a peaceful and memorable week in Nepal.
I chose Ama Yangri because I wanted something different from the more famous trekking routes, and I was very happy with the decision. The trail had a nice mix of forest, villages, uphill sections, and mountain scenery. I especially enjoyed learning about the local culture along the way. Race was friendly, patient, and knowledgeable throughout the trek.
Ama Yangri sits in the Helambu region of Sindhupalchok district, within Langtang National Park, roughly 75–90km north-east of Kathmandu. It is one of the closest genuine Himalayan trekking destinations to the capital, reached by road via Melamchi to Timbu and Tarkeghyang, both well within a day’s drive of Kathmandu.
The route drives out from Kathmandu through the Melamchi valley to Timbu, then climbs on foot through pine and rhododendron forest to Tarkeghyang, one of the oldest and most significant Sherpa settlements in the Helambu region, home to a historic monastery. From Tarkeghyang, the trek’s central day is a full round-trip hike up to Ama Yangri Peak at 3,771m, a steep but non-technical climb through forest that opens out into alpine terrain near the summit. After returning to Tarkeghyang, the trek descends to Sermathang, another Hyolmo village known for its own monastery and mountain views, before the drive back to Kathmandu.
Few genuine Himalayan summits within reach of Kathmandu can be climbed and returned from within a single week. Ama Yangri offers close-up 360-degree Himalayan views — including Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, the Jugal Himal, Gaurishankar, Ganesh Himal and, on a clear day, Everest — without the flight logistics, permits or duration of the Everest or Annapurna regions. The peak also carries genuine local religious significance as the guardian deity of the Helambu valley, giving the summit day a cultural weight beyond simply reaching a viewpoint.
Trekkers choose the Ama Yangri Trek when time is limited but a genuine Himalayan summit and close mountain views still matter. At 7 days including Kathmandu arrival and departure, this is considerably shorter than a typical Everest or Annapurna trek, with no domestic flight required — the entire route is accessible by road from Kathmandu. The trade-off is scale: Ama Yangri’s views, while genuinely panoramic, come from a lower and more accessible peak than the giants further into the Everest or Annapurna regions, and the trek doesn’t offer the extended immersion of a longer trip. For travellers who want a real high-altitude summit, Sherpa and Hyolmo culture, and a week (or less) away from Kathmandu, it’s a strong, honest choice.
The Ama Yangri Trek is graded moderate. The trekking days themselves are relatively short in number, but the summit day — from Tarkeghyang to Ama Yangri Peak and back — is demanding, gaining roughly 1,171 metres over the course of a single round trip, estimated at 7 to 8 hours. Trail conditions are a mix of well-marked forest path through oak, pine and rhododendron, becoming rockier and more exposed near the summit. Because there is no teahouse en route to the peak, trekkers carry snacks and water for the full day. Altitude risk on this trek is comparatively low, since the highest point is reached and left within a single day hike rather than an overnight stay, and the itinerary allows for acclimatisation at Tarkeghyang (2,600m) before the summit attempt. A reasonable level of general fitness is recommended, and a slow, steady pace on the summit day is more important than speed.
Two permits are required for this trek. The Langtang National Park Entry Permit is mandatory, as Ama Yangri and the surrounding Helambu trails fall within the park boundary, and is obtained through a licensed trekking agency or at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu. The TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) is also required for this region, unlike the Everest/Khumbu area where it has been replaced by a local permit. Independent solo trekking is not permitted on Nepal’s national trail network, so a licensed guide is mandatory for this trek — which is included as part of the Alliance Treks package. Both permits are arranged by Alliance Treks as part of standard trek preparation; please confirm current fees at the time of booking, as these are periodically revised.
Alliance Treks & Expeditions has been organising treks across Nepal, including in the Helambu and Langtang region, since 1992. For a short, road-accessible trek like this one, that experience shows up in practical route knowledge — knowing the current condition of the Melamchi–Timbu road, the right pacing for the demanding Ama Yangri summit day, and how to plan around Helambu’s changeable afternoon weather. Our guides know Tarkeghyang and Sermathang well, including the local monasteries and cultural sites worth pointing out along the way, and are trained to manage the altitude and exertion of the summit day even on a trek that doesn’t reach extreme elevations. Permits, including the mandatory guide requirement for this region, are arranged in advance, and support runs from your arrival in Kathmandu through to your departure, with the team available to discuss pacing or itinerary adjustments if needed.
