Muldai Trek Nepal

Muldai Trek is one of the best-kept secrets in Nepal trekking — a 9-day route from Kathmandu that delivers a complete 360-degree Himalayan panorama from an altitude of 3,637 metres.

The Muldai Trek takes you through the beautiful Gurung village of Ghandruk, up through rhododendron forests to the high ridge at Tadapani, across open alpine meadows to Dobato, and then to the summit of Muldai Hill — where Dhaulagiri, the full Annapurna range, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre, and dozens of other peaks fill every direction of the horizon. The Muldai Trek also includes a sunrise climb to the famous Poon Hill viewpoint and an overnight at the quieter, less crowded Mohare Danda ridge. No technical experience needed. Just good boots and a willingness to walk.

Muldai Trek - Trip Highlights

  1. Muldai Trek -360° Muldai Viewpoint (3,637 m): A complete Himalayan panorama in every direction — Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre. More peaks than almost any other accessible viewpoint in Nepal.
  2. Muldai Trek is less crowded than Poon Hill: Muldai Hill sees a fraction of the visitors that Poon Hill draws each morning — a better view in near total peace.
  3. Muldai Trek - Poon Hill sunrise included: The Muldai Trek also takes in the famous Poon Hill (3,210 m) viewpoint — giving you two world-class panoramas on the same trip.
  4. Mohare Danda overnight: A high ridge with sweeping views and very few trekkers — one of the Annapurna region's best-kept secrets.
  5. Muldai Trek - Ghandruk Gurung village: Traditional stone lanes, a local museum, and direct views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre from the village terrace.
  6. Rhododendron forest in spring: The trail between Ghandruk and Ghorepani passes through Nepal's finest rhododendron forest — vivid red and pink from March to May.
  7. Live snowfall possible in winter: Fresh snow at Dobato and Muldai Hill in December and January makes the Muldai Trek one of the most photogenic winter walks in the Annapurna foothills.
  8. Muldai View point trek - Compact and manageable: 9 days Kathmandu to Kathmandu — big mountain rewards without weeks of time commitment or extreme altitude.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Kathmandu (1350 m)

  • Walking DistanceArrive in Kathmandu
  • Highest Altitude1,310 m
  • AccommodationHotel in Kathmandu
  • Included mealsBreakfast
Your Muldai Trek begins in Kathmandu (1,310m). Alliance Treks  representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), welcome and transfers you to your hotel in Thamel — the city's lively trekking hub. Take the afternoon to settle in, explore the bazaar lanes, and browse any last-minute gear shops. We collect your passport photo copy with Nepal visa for official record and also collect 2 passport size photos for the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) and Trekkers' Information Management Committee (TIMS) permit. In the evening, your licensed guide runs a detailed Muldai Trek briefing: the full 9-day route, altitude strategy, what to expect at Muldai Viewpoint, permit requirements, and what village life looks like along the trail. Tip: Withdraw enough Nepali rupees tonight — there are no ATMs anywhere on the Muldai Trek trail after Pokhara. Check your permits, passport, and travel insurance documents before bed. If you want, we do offer you USD 30 for single room  and USD 35 for double room per night on BB (Bed and Breakfast) basis centrally located at Thamel called Atithi Hotel & Apartment (P.) Ltd.

Day 2 Kathmandu - Pokhara (822 m)

  • Walking Distance4-5 hrs
  • Highest Altitude822 m
  • AccommodationHotel in Pokhara
  • Included mealsBreakfast
After an early breakfast, the six-hour drive to Pokhara follows the Prithvi Highway west along the Trishuli River gorge — a scenic road in its own right. Pokhara is Nepal's trekking capital, set beside the calm waters of Phewa Lake with Machhapuchhre looming above the skyline. Use the evening to wander Lakeside, draw cash, sort any final gear needs, and enjoy a proper restaurant dinner. Tomorrow the Muldai Trek road section continues — and the day after that, the boots go on. Tip: Pokhara is the last place with reliable ATMs before the Muldai Trek trail. Withdraw enough rupees for all meals, hot showers, and personal expenses for 7 days.

Day 3 Drive to Ghandruk (1950 m) - Trek to Tadapani (2630 m)

  • Walking Distance4-5 hrs
  • Highest Altitude2630 m
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
A jeep carries you from Pokhara up to Ghandruk — a classic Gurung village at 1,950 m with stone-paved lanes and a jaw-dropping view of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre from the terrace of almost every lodge. This is where the Muldai Trek starts on foot. The trail climbs through terraced fields and thick rhododendron forest, gaining altitude steadily toward the ridge settlement of Tadapani. In spring, the forest is covered in blooms. Tadapani (2,630 m) sits above the treeline with open mountain views — a warm, friendly overnight stop at the start of the Muldai Trek's high section.

Day 4 Trek Tadapani - Dobato (3,350 m)

  • Walking Distance4-5 hrs
  • Highest Altitude3,350 m
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
This is where the Muldai Trek leaves the more popular Annapurna routes behind. From Tadapani the trail climbs north toward Dobato, separating from the Ghorepani crowds and entering a quieter, wilder landscape of high alpine meadow and open ridgeline. The forest gives way to open pasture, yaks appear on the hillsides, and the silence becomes genuinely noticeable. Dobato (3,350 m) is a small seasonal settlement perched on the ridge — very few trekkers reach this point. Muldai Hill is visible above. Prepare your summit gear tonight. Tonight: Pack your summit daypack — headlamp, warm layers, gloves, camera, water, snacks. You leave for Muldai Hill before dawn tomorrow. Sleep early.

Day 5 Muldai Hill (3637 m) to Ghorepani (2800 m) via Deurali

  • Walking Distance6 hrs
  • Highest Altitude3,637 m
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
The alarm goes off before sunrise. You step outside into cold dark air and begin the climb to Muldai Hill — the centrepiece of the entire Muldai Trek. It is a steep one-hour push from Dobato, your breath steaming, your headlamp carving a path through the dark. Then the summit. The Muldai Viewpoint (3,637 m / 11,932 ft) opens up with a full 360-degree Himalayan panorama: Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) to the west, the long white wall of the Annapurna range across the north, Manaslu (8,163 m) and Ganesh Himal to the east, Machhapuchhre's perfect fishtail peak to the south. More peaks visible from a single point than almost anywhere else in the Annapurna region — and you likely have it entirely to yourself. After the sunrise, descend via Deurali to Ghorepani for the night. 360° views from Muldai Viewpoint: Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) · Annapurna I–IV · Annapurna South · Gangapurna · Machhapuchhre · Hiunchuli · Lamjung Himal · Manaslu (8,163 m) · Ganesh Himal

Day 6 Poon Hill (3210 m) to Mohare Danda (3313 m)

  • Walking Distance5 hrs
  • Highest Altitude3,313 m
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
Another early start. The Muldai Trek adds Poon Hill (3,210 m / 10,531 ft) to its collection — a pre-dawn climb from Ghorepani along a well-worn stone path to the most famous sunrise viewpoint on any short Nepal trek. The Annapurna range and Dhaulagiri turn gold in the morning light in a view that earns every step of the climb. Back in Ghorepani for breakfast, the trail then heads east along the ridge toward Mohare Danda (3,313 m / 10,826 ft) — a quieter, less visited high point with its own full mountain panorama. Spend the evening watching the light fade on the peaks from one of the Annapurna foothills' most peaceful overnight spots.

Day 7 Trek: Mohare Danda to Ulleri (2055 m)

  • Walking Distance5-6 hrs
  • Highest Altitude2,055 m
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
A full descent day on the Muldai Trek. The trail drops steeply from Mohare Danda through forest and small village settlements, eventually reaching Ulleri (2,055 m / 6,791 ft) — famous for its long stone staircase. The descent is demanding on the knees but the views keep coming. Trekking poles are your best friend today. Ulleri is a warm, relaxed overnight stop where a hot meal and the satisfaction of the descent both feel very well earned.

Day 8 Ulleri - Birethanti (1025 m) - Pokhara (915 m)

  • Walking Distance4 hours walking
  • Highest Altitude1,025 m
  • AccommodationHotel in Pokhara
  • Included mealsBreakfast
A short walk from Ulleri brings you down to Birethanti — the official road-head and the end of the Muldai Trek on foot. A waiting jeep drives you back to Pokhara in about 90 minutes. Back in the city, Phewa Lake and a full restaurant menu are your reward for a week on the trail. Hot shower, cold beer, and one of Lakeside's excellent dinners make for a satisfying final evening on the Muldai Trek. Celebrate well — you earned it.

Day 9 Drive Pokhara (915m) - Kathmandu (1,350 m) by tourist Bus.

  • Highest Altitude1,350 m
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
The final day of the Muldai Trek. The drive back to Kathmandu retraces the Prithvi Highway through the river gorge, arriving in the capital by evening. If you are flying out the same day, an early departure is arranged. If you have a final night in Kathmandu, Thamel is ready for last-minute souvenirs — thangka paintings, singing bowls, yak-wool shawls, and good Himalayan coffee. The Muldai Trek is complete. The 360-degree view from Muldai Hill stays with you a long time after.

Therefore, the Muldhai Trek has become a perfect choice for trekkers who want a less crowded and more rewarding trekking experience in Nepal.

1.  Enjoy Spectacular 360-Degree Himalayan Views

The main highlight of the Muldai Trek is the breathtaking panorama from Muldai View Point or Muldhai Danda at 3,637 meters. Unlike many other viewpoints, Muldai offers stunning mountain scenery in every direction. As the sun rises over the Himalayas, trekkers witness magical golden light covering the snow-capped peaks.

From the viewpoint, trekkers can clearly see famous mountains such as Annapurna South, Machapuchare, Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, Nilgiri, and Lamjung Himal.

2. Walk Through Peaceful and Less Crowded Trails

Unlike the busy Poon Hill route, the Mulde Trek allows trekkers to enjoy peaceful walking trails with fewer tourists. Consequently, trekkers can connect closely with nature, listen to the sounds of birds and forests, and fully enjoy the beauty of the Annapurna region.

3. Explore Beautiful Rhododendron Forests

The trail passes through dense rhododendron forests, especially colorful during the spring season. Bright red, pink, and white flowers decorate the hillsides and create unforgettable scenery. In addition, the fresh mountain air and peaceful environment make every walking day enjoyable and relaxing.

4. Experience Authentic Gurung and Magar Culture

During the Muldhai Trek Nepal, trekkers pass through beautiful traditional villages such as Ghandruk, Dobato, and Tadapani. Local Gurung and Magar communities warmly welcome visitors and proudly share their culture, traditions, and mountain lifestyle. 6. Choose the Best Alternative to Poon Hill Trek

Today, many trekkers consider the Muldai Best Trek a better alternative to the popular Poon Hill trek. As a result, trekkers enjoy a more personal and authentic Himalayan adventure.

7. Capture Incredible Sunrise and Sunset Photography

Muldai Danda gives photographers and nature lovers endless opportunities for amazing photography. Early morning sunlight slowly brightens the Himalayan peaks, while evening sunsets create beautiful golden landscapes across the mountains. Therefore, the trek is perfect for photography, videography, and drone filming.

8. Discover Rich Nature and Wildlife

Since the trek lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, trekkers often see colorful birds, butterflies, monkeys, and other wildlife during the journey. Furthermore, waterfalls, green hills, alpine landscapes, and peaceful forests make the trek naturally beautiful throughout the route.

9. Enjoy Comfortable Tea House Trekking

The Muldhai Trek also offers comfortable tea house accommodation along the trail. Every evening, trekkers can relax in cozy mountain lodges, enjoy local Nepali meals, and share trekking stories with fellow travelers. Thus, the trek provides adventure while still maintaining comfort and hospitality.

10. Experience One of the Best Short Treks in Nepal

Above all, the Muldai Trek Nepal perfectly combines Himalayan mountain views, peaceful nature, local culture, and short trekking days. Therefore, this hidden gem in the Annapurna region has become one of the most beautiful short treks in Nepal for both beginner and experienced trekkers.

Muldai Trek Transportation from Kathmandu, Pokhara, and the Road to Ghandruk:

The beautiful Muldai Trek Nepal journey starts in Kathmandu on Day 1 with your arrival and a detailed pre-trek briefing. After preparing for the adventure, you travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara on Day 2. You can either enjoy a scenic 6–7 hour tourist bus ride through the hills and rivers of Nepal or choose a quick 25-minute domestic flight to Pokhara. Known as the gateway to the Annapurna region, Pokhara welcomes trekkers with its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful Phewa Lake, and the stunning backdrop of Machapuchare Himalaya. Therefore, many travelers spend time exploring the lakeside city before starting the trek.

On Day 3, the journey continues with a shared public jeep drive from Pokhara to Ghandrung or it also called Ghandruk one of the most beautiful and photographed Gurung villages in the Annapurna region. However, trekkers who prefer more comfort and flexibility can also hire a private jeep at an additional cost. As the road climbs higher through green hills, waterfalls, rivers, and traditional villages, the drive itself becomes an exciting part of the Muldhai Trek experience. Moreover, traveling by road instead of taking expensive domestic mountain flights helps reduce the overall Muldai Trek cost while allowing trekkers to enjoy Nepal’s changing landscapes and local mountain lifestyle along the way. From Ghandruk, the real walking adventure of the Mulde Trek begins, leading trekkers toward peaceful forests, traditional villages, and the breathtaking Muldai View Point in the heart of the Annapurna Himalayas. Road from Pokhara to Ghandrung village is fairly good except in the monsoon.

Ghandrung, Tadapani, and the Muldai Trek forest section

Ghandruk (1,950 m)/Ghandrung is where the Muldai Trek properly begins on foot. The village is a living, working Gurung community with stone-paved lanes, traditional flat-roofed houses, a small museum, and direct views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. From Ghandruk the trail climbs through dense rhododendron and oak forest to Tadapani (2,630 m) — a cosy ridge-top settlement that is a favourite overnight stop for good reason. In spring, the entire forest section turns vivid red and pink as the rhododendrons bloom. It is one of the most beautiful walks in Nepal at any time of year.

Dobato — the remote heart of the Muldai Trek

Day 4 takes you beyond the more frequented trails and into genuinely remote territory. The climb from Tadapani to Dobato (3,350 m) leaves the main trekking routes behind. The forest thins, the landscape opens, and yaks appear on the high-altitude pastures that surround Dobato. Very few trekkers make it to this point — most Annapurna foothills trekkers stay on the lower routes between Ghorepani and Ghandruk. Dobato feels earned. The Muldai Hill summit is visible from the lodge terrace, and the pre-dawn alarm that follows is the most exciting one of the whole trip.

Muldai Viewpoint — the summit of the Muldai Trek

Day 5 is the heart of the Muldai Trek. You hike to Muldai Hill (3,637 m) before sunrise — a steep but manageable one-hour push from Dobato in the dark with headlamps on. The summit delivers exactly what the Muldai Trek promises: Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) to the west, the Annapurna range sweeping north, Manaslu (8,163 m) and Ganesh Himal to the east, and Machhapuchhre’s iconic triangular summit to the south. It is a complete, unobstructed 360-degree Himalayan panorama at a viewpoint that most trekkers in Nepal have never heard of. After the sunrise the trail descends via Deurali to Ghorepani.

Poon Hill and Mohare Danda — two bonus viewpoints on the Muldai Trek

Day 6 of the Muldai Trek adds two more high points. The pre-dawn climb to Poon Hill (3,210 m) from Ghorepani gives you the famous Annapurna and Dhaulagiri sunrise — one of the most iconic views in all of Nepal. After breakfast the trail continues east along the ridge to Mohare Danda (3,313 m), a quieter and less visited viewpoint with its own sweeping panorama across the Kali Gandaki valley and Annapurna foothills. Spending the night at Mohare Danda means you wake to yet another world-class mountain view on Day 7.

The descent — Ulleri, Birethanti, and back to Pokhara from Muldai Danda trekking

Days 7 and 8 bring the Muldai Trek back to earth. From Mohare Danda you descend to Ulleri (2,055 m) via a long stone staircase — steep but manageable with trekking poles. The descent to Birethanti and the short drive back to Pokhara marks the end of the walking section. After a final night in Pokhara, Day 9 is the return drive to Kathmandu, completing the full Muldai Trek loop.

You Should Know Before Travel Expand All Collapse All

The Muldai Trek is a short trek in Nepal's Annapurna Conservation Area which culminates in Muldai view point or viewpoint or Muldai view at 3637 metres. It is one of the most popular alternatives to the renowned Poon Hill Trek with a panoramic view of the Himalayas from one vantage point, which encompasses the Dhaulagiri range, the Annapurna range, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

The Muldai Trek is a moderate trek for the average fit person who can walk for 4–6 hours a day on mountain trails. There is no need to have prior climbing experience or technical skills. The hardest part is the early morning hike up to Muldai Hill from Dobato (approx. 1 hour headlamp required). The altitude of 3637 metres does not pose a serious risk for altitude sickness in comparison with higher treks in the Himalayas.

The Muldai Trek can be done in 9 days from Kathmandu. The actual number of trekking days is from Ghandruk to Tadapani, Dobato, Muldai Viewpoint, Ghorepani, Poon Hill, Mohare Danda, Birethanti, and back to Pokhara.

Muldai Viewpoint (Mulde View Point) at 3,637 m above sea level is the highest point of the Muldai Trek. This is above the much famed Poon Hill viewpoint (3,210 metres) and Mohare Danda (3,313 metres), which are also covered in the full tour.

Yes, for most trekkers who prefer a more out-of-the-way, panoramic experience. Poon Hill is classic and offers a breathtaking north-facing view, but Muldai Viewpoint provides a full 360-degree panorama, with views of more peaks in every direction: north, south, east, and west. Muldai Hill is also more inaccessible, less frequented, and more remote. Actually, the Muldai Trek is a bonus viewpoint trek to Poon Hill on Day 6, so you will get two in one trek.

From Muldai Viewpoint (3,637m) on a clear morning, the magnificent mountains of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) west, the entire Annapurna range to the north, Manaslu (8,163m) east, Ganesh Himal east, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993m) south can be seen. One of the most comprehensive views of the Himalayas on any short trek in Nepal.

Yes. The Muldai Trek is through the Annapurna Conservation Area, and the permit required includes two permits: Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS). Both are set up in Pokhara or Kathmandu before the trekking day. No paperwork hassles, except for your passport – Alliance Treks arranges all permits for you.

Spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) are the best seasons. Spring also brings you the blooming rhododendron forests between Ghandruk and Tadapani, which is one of the best natural shows in Nepal, besides pleasant weather and relatively cloudless mornings.
