Trip Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Kathmandu (1,325m/ 4,344ft)

  • Highest Altitude1,325m/ 4,344ft
  • AccommodationHotel in Kathmandu
  • Included mealsBreakfast
Your Helambu trek begins the moment you step out of Tribhuvan International Airport into the vibrant chaos of Kathmandu. You will be transferred to your hotel in the heart of Thamel, where the narrow lanes, incense smoke, and the distant sound of monastery bells immediately signal that you have arrived somewhere extraordinary. The evening welcome briefing with your guide covers the route ahead, permit requirements, packing essentials, and the cultural communities you will pass through. A warm welcome dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant sets the tone for the journey ahead.

Day 2 Drive to Sundarijal & Trek to Chisapani (2,300m/ 1,546ft)

  • Walking Distance4-5 hours
  • Highest Altitude2,300m/ 1,546ft
  • AccommodationTeahouse/Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
After breakfast, a short private vehicle transfer takes you northeast from Thamel to Sundarijal — a name that translates as "Beautiful Waterfall" in Nepali, earned by the impressive cascade of water tumbling beside the hydroelectric canal that supplies much of Kathmandu's drinking water. Register your permits at the Shivapuri National Park checkpoint and begin the ascent through dense oak and rhododendron forest, pausing at the Tamang village of Mulkharka for a well-earned tea break with sweeping views of the Kathmandu Valley spreading below. The trail continues through the lush forest, gaining the ridge steadily before arriving at Chisapani — meaning "Cold Water" — a hilltop settlement perched at the meeting point of Kathmandu, Nuwakot, and Sindhupalchok districts. On clear evenings, the panorama from the ridge is simply outstanding: Jugal Himal, Ganesh Himal, Gauri Shankar, Rolwaling, Dorje Lakpa, and the entire Langtang range glow in the fading light above a patchwork of forested valleys.

Day 3 Trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang (2,470m/ 8,104ft)

  • Walking Distance5-6 hours
  • Highest Altitude2,470m/ 8,104ft
  • AccommodationLocal Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast

Rise early morning to catch one of the finest sunrise panoramas near Kathmandu — the Langtang range, Gauri Shankar, and Dorje Lakpa, catching the first golden light in complete silence above the valley mist. After breakfast, the trail descends through Pati Bhanjyang before climbing to Gul Bhanjyang and making a final descent through the Sherpa settlement of Thakune Bhanjyang to the ridgeline village of Kutumsang.

The walking is a pleasing mix of forested descent and open ridge traversal, passing through traditional stone-walled hamlets, terraced barley and millet fields, and stands of rhododendron and bamboo. Kutumsang sits on a broad elevated spur with views of the Langtang range and surrounding forested ridgelines — a quiet, pleasant overnight with the warmth of a Sherpa teahouse and the smell of woodsmoke in the mountain air.

Day 4 Trek from Kutumsang to Tharepati (3,600m/ 11,800ft)

  • Walking Distance6-7 hours
  • Highest Altitude3,600m/ 11,800ft
  • AccommodationTea House / Local Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
This is the most demanding and most dramatically rewarding day of the entire trek. Leaving Kutumsang behind, the trail climbs steadily through magnificent rhododendron forest. Pass through Yurin Danda and the high grazing settlement of Magen Goth (3,420m), where views of Dorje Lakpa begin dominating the northern skyline. The final ascent to Tharepati is steep and exposed, but the ridge that awaits is extraordinary — a high, wind-swept platform with unobstructed 360-degree views encompassing Dorje Lakpa, Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and Gauri Shankar to the north and west, the rolling Helambu ridgelines to the south and east. This is the highest point of the Helambu Circuit, and arriving here after a full day of climbing through forest and open ridge feels like reaching the top of a private world.

Day 5 Trek from Tharepati to Tarke Gyang (2,531m/ 8,300ft)

  • Walking Distance4-5 hours
  • Highest Altitude2,531m/ 8,300ft
  • AccommodationTea House / Local Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
From Tharepati, the trail descends steeply through progressively denser mixed forest, the temperature rising noticeably with every hundred metres of altitude lost. Cross the crystal-clear Melamchi Khola river at the valley floor — a welcome pause at the water's edge before the path climbs the opposite bank through forest and open meadow to Tarke Gyang, the cultural centrepiece of the entire Helambu region. Tarke Gyang is the most historically significant and architecturally beautiful village on the circuit — home to the largest and most ancient monastery in Helambu, whose origins are associated with the visits of Guru Rinpoche to this very valley centuries ago. The monastery's giant prayer wheel, thangka murals, and butter lamp shrines are tended by a community of Sherpa and Yolmo families who have maintained these sacred spaces for generations. An evening stroll through the stone-paved lanes of Tarke Gyang, the mountains framed between prayer-flag-draped rooftops, is one of the trek's defining moments.

Day 6 Tarke Gyang to Sermanthang (2,610m/ 8,563ft)

  • Walking Distance3-4 hours
  • Highest Altitude2,610m/ 8,563ft
  • AccommodationTea House / Lodge
  • Included mealsBreakfast
A shorter, pleasant day through the small Sherpa settlement of Gangyul (2,520m), crossing a narrow forest to Chumik before the final climb to Sermanthang. This large, prosperous Sherpa village sits on an elevated ridge with commanding views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Rolwaling, and Gosaikunda — one of the best mountain panoramas on the entire trek.

Day 7 Sermanthang to Melamchi Pul Bazaar & Drive to Kathmandu (1,325m/ 4,344ft)

  • Walking Distance4-5 hours
  • Highest Altitude1,325m/ 4,344ft
  • AccommodationHotel in Kathmandu
  • Included mealsBreakfast

The final trekking day descends through the remote and beautiful lower Helambu countryside, passing through the small villages of Nigale, Gyalsha, and Raithani Gyang, where rice terraces, pine forests, and the sound of the Melamchi River growing louder with every hour of descent signal the gradual return to the lower world. Arrive at the lively riverfront market of Melamchi Pul Bazaar, where mani walls, prayer flags, and chortens line the main street in a final flourish of Buddhist cultural character.

A private vehicle waits to return you to Kathmandu along the scenic road through Banepa and Bhaktapur — a 2-hour journey back through Nepal's mid-hill landscape as the city skyline eventually reappears. The evening farewell dinner in Thamel brings the Helambu Circuit to a fitting close — a celebration of seven days in one of Nepal's most authentic and most rewarding trekking landscapes.

Perfect Trek for First-Time Visitors to Nepal

This was my first trekking experience in Nepal, and I couldn’t have chosen a better route than the Helambu Circuit Trek. It was challenging enough to feel adventurous while remaining comfortable for someone with moderate hiking experience.

The forests, mountain views, peaceful villages, and traditional tea houses made every day enjoyable. I especially loved watching the sunrise from Chisapani and the panoramic Himalayan views from Tharepati. The route was quiet and felt much more authentic than the busier trekking destinations.

Alliance Treks exceeded my expectations with excellent communication, professional planning, and friendly staff. My guide constantly checked on everyone’s health, explained local history, and made the entire journey enjoyable. Everything was organized smoothly, allowing me to simply relax and enjoy the mountains.

I highly recommend Alliance Treks to anyone planning a short Himalayan trek near Kathmandu. I’ll definitely be back for the Langtang Valley Trek next time.

Beautiful Culture, Friendly People, and Stunning Landscapes

The Helambu Circuit Trek surprised us in every possible way. We expected beautiful mountains, but we also discovered rich local culture, peaceful monasteries, and incredibly warm hospitality from the Yolmo and Sherpa communities.

Every day brought new scenery—from dense rhododendron forests to traditional stone villages and spectacular Himalayan viewpoints. Our favorite place was Tarke Gyang, where we spent time visiting the ancient monastery and learning about local traditions.

Alliance Treks provided outstanding service from the beginning until the end of our journey. The itinerary was well balanced, the lodges were comfortable, and our guide always looked after our safety and comfort.

Thank you to Mr. Kul Gurung and the Alliance Treks family for organizing such a memorable trekking holiday. We will certainly return for another adventure in Nepal.
